What is your project focus? My project focus ultimately is to raise informed awareness to all stakeholders (student’s academics, parents) of the lack of cultural diversity within UAL’s student make up, in particularly young black & brown students and explore the reason’s why this is the case in order to facilitate steps to mitigate and encourage them to see UAL’s BA Textile Design Programme as a viable HE option.
What are you going to read about? Diversity & Inclusion in creative education. What are the practical steps being taken to encourage D&I ? What ‘ hero projects’/initiatives that are in practice already addressing D&I. What are the barriers to access information for students. Methods of data collection. Visualise, Race & Inclusion In Secondary School Art Education. Dr Shabna Begum, Marlene Wylie, Hassaan, Anwari and Simon Wood. FACE Race Handbook for Educators First Edition (2024) Sister Outsider, Audre Lorde.
What action are you going to take in your teaching practice? The action I’m going to take is a series of workshops ( 2-3 in total) with BATDY3 Final year students exploring the topic of Positioning & Inclusivity which culminate in a presentation event open to the public and held at the 2025 BA textiles Graduate Show where graduating students that have works specifically inspired by this topic. Students will participate by the following: – Attending the workshops at undertaking group tasks – Discussing their practice through the lens of positioning & inclusivity – Filling out a questionnaire about their work and their experience within the workshops – Presenting their work at the Graduate Show 2025
Who will be involved and how? BATDY3 Students to gather insight by taking part in 2-3 workshops, where data collection will be undertaking through questionnaires handed out to Y3 students within the workshops. Myself, Jodie Ruffle Year 3 Leader BATD and Claire Anderson Course Leader will have discussions exploring opportunities for raising awareness and outreach to the demographic. N.B. If any of your participants/co-researchers will be under 18, please seek advice from your tutor.
What is the health & safety concerns, and how will you prepare for them? None I can identify at this stage
How will you protect the data of those involved? Keep any data/communications gathered on password protected UAL computers and platforms.Data will be anonymous & confidential
How will you work with your participants in an ethical way? Make sure all data is collected and stored on password protected UAL laptop. There are no ethical concerns relating to the project and to student participants. There no issues relating to power that I can think of at this stage the research will elicit, apart from my own positioning as a student facing academic teaching on the BATD Course. I think the focus of the workshops has a tangible link to their Unit 10 projects so in that respect I feel students will be compelled to take part.
